Welcome to Verdure Naturopathy, I am Jodi, I am a naturopath and a nurse.
My mission is help men and women who have neglected their health, which has resulted in chronic disease, that is caused by digestive dysfunction, hormonal imbalances and weight gain.
Many people do not realise that their body is constantly interacting with the environment that they live and work in, and reacting to the fuel that they put in it. Our body is a complex machine, and we need to take care for it to ensure that it can operate at its best, just like we would care for our car or our garden.
Our health is dependent on the following:
- Fuel we put in (food)
- Our environment
- Knowledge & Education
- Genetic Risk factors
I know the above only to well, my story is long, and I do not have enough time to share it with you here, but I will give you a sneak peak into my life and how my body responded to my environment:
How it all began:
You see I fed my body a diet of highly processed carbohydrates and sugar, in fact I loved sugar so much I could never get enough of it. I had no idea it was not good for me. Everything was ok in my teens and my 20’s I struggled with my weight but just accepted that “as how I was”, I did not realise what it was doing to the chemistry of my body, traumatic childhood events had also impacted my health through being in a constant state of “fight or fright” response.
Despite this my life was good, I started a enrolled nursing course, met my life partner and married, had two healthy babies, and began my university degree in nursing. it wasn’t until my late 20’s during my third pregnancy I realised how old my body was really feeling. I struggled with chronic back pain through the last trimester, however amazing as my body is I gave birth and the pain an inflammation settled for a few more years, so I ignored the signs.
After years of working shift work, caring for my family and filling my body with junk foods, and truthfully on night duty I would eat a bag of lollies just to stay awake and to stop the feeling of nausea that would creep up at about 3 am, so it was no surprise that in 2008 I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic, I had been diagnosed with Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) prior to this in 2005 and managed for some time on a medication often used to manage type II diabetes. I did not realise what this condition did or how it would make me feel or how it would affect my life. I just remember the gynaecologist telling me “you must avoid stress” he understood the relationship between and stress and hormone imbalance.
- Weight gain
- Irregular periods
- Reduced libido
- Low energy levels
- Chronic joint pain
- Lowered immunity
- Hair thinning
- Low mood
My immune system was so low, many trips to my GP occurred over time with tiredness, lethargy, joint pain, depression and finally a severe case of shingles. At this time, I knew my immune system was compromised and requested they test my thyroid, it was found that I had Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. The doctors still told me that it was just being a working mum that had caused all these problems and there was nothing they could do to help me. I remember times when I could barely stand up with out extreme pain in my feet on standing. I couldn’t exercise because I was in so much pain and when I did exercise it got worse. I felt so miserable.
I took the challenge to lose some weight to reverse the risk of Type 2 Diabetes I lost 15 kg and reversed all the symptoms. I did not understand that I was now insulin resistant and how I could manage it, no one had explained this to me, accept for telling me to lose weight and take medication.
I enjoyed a few years with relatively stable health and then in 2014, I developed spinal issues came back, I had been experiencing some muscle twitching and involuntary movements. I was very concerned as my genetics were not good my maternal grandmother died of Motor Neuron Disease, I was scared of the possibility that I may have the same genetic issue.
I was planning who would look after my children and how my husband would go on in my absence, and the neurologist could not give me any definite answer accept that she did not think that was my problem and if it was “it would not get me until I was much older” this was of little comfort. My back pain was very serious, I was put on medication to control the pain. I could not imagine how I could improve or even how I would get back to work. However, things improved in the following weeks and I was able to get back to work. I joined a gym and worked hard to improve my strength, but I was still having difficulty with pain and decided I would see a naturopath as pain and weight were still limiting my life.
She taught me about my body, she taught me about inflammation and the foods that cause it, she changed my life. I lost weight naturally and with no diet involved. I excluded all highly processed foods, sugar and gluten. I love to cook so it was not hard, I just needed to cook at home and stay away from processed foods, gluten and sugar.
My Natural Health Results:
- Reduced pain
- Improved mobility
- Improved energy
- Improved mood
For the first time in a longtime I was pain free, this was awesome, and something I needed to know more about, so I enrolled in a naturopathy course and extended my health knowledge.
Although I am very well, I know that the constant stress of my chosen career as a nurse coupled with the affects of stress caused from childhood trauma makes it difficult avoid all of the health complications that stress causes. This became evident in 2017 when I was diagnosed with a rare brain disease (Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension) unfortunately this disease causes increased Cerebro Spinal Fluid (CSF). However, when I go to the doctors they cannot believe how well I look and how I manage in my daily life, they tell me this is very unusual with IIH. I believe it is my knowledge of my body and the ability to manage inflammation through diet and lifestyle that is keeping me well. (This is my story and is not intended to recommend, diagnose or treat, if you have health concerns you should talk with your health professional)
